HARRY NORMAN, REALTORS® LANDS FOUR PROPERTY LISTINGS DESIGNED BY ACCLAIMED NEEL REID

Harry Norman, REALTORS® has added four beautiful properties designed by renowned southern architect Neel Reid to its exclusive roster of listings. One of Atlanta’s most well-known residential architects in the early 20th century, Reid’s work helped shape the city’s home design landscape, and is still admired today for its exceptional quality, craftmanship, and detail. Harry Norman, REALTORS® is proud to offer its clientele Neel Reid-designed homes in both Atlanta’s Ansley Park and Buckhead neighborhoods.

“To own a Neel Reid home is like owning a piece of architectural history,” said Jenni Bonura, Harry Norman, REALTORS® President and CEO. “He was one of Atlanta’s greatest architects, whose work remains highly respected and has laid the foundation for the design of residential homes and iconic landmarks throughout the city.  We are incredibly excited and honored to be representing four Neel Reid-designed properties right now.”

Reid’s architectural impact on Atlanta cannot be overstated. After training under Georgia architects like Curran R. Ellis and Willis F. Denny and receiving a formal education from New York’s Columbia University and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Reid first opened his own architectural firm with partner Hal F. Hentz in 1909, with offices in both Macon and Atlanta. Many of Reid’s early designs were created in Macon for friends and family. The firm later closed its Macon office after recognizing greater opportunities for work in Atlanta. Along with several partners, including Hentz, Godfrey L. Norman, Rudolph Adler, and Philip Schutze, Reid successfully ran one of Atlanta’s most successful architectural firms until his death in 1926. Some of Reid’s most notable homes and landmarks include the Haas-Howell Building, the Henry B. Thompkins House, Atlanta’s Peachtree Station (Amtrak Station), the Scottish Rite Hospital (now part of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta), many buildings in Marietta’s Whitlock Historic District, the Eagle House, the Pink Palace, The Swan House’s Olgulita’s Garden and Terrace and more.

Reid’s works often combine styles from several different periods, an architectural style known as eclecticism. While many architects used an eclectic style in their work, Reid’s designs often stood out and featured unique elements of experimentation and freedom. In a time where many Americans were leaving cities and opting for areas that would come to be known as suburbs, Reid brought fresh and unexpected solutions to the designs of suburban homes. Neel Reid homes were often seen as markers of prestige, with many of Atlanta’s most successful residents choosing houses designed by Reid and his partners. Reid paid particular attention to many elements when designing homes, from the location and possibility for gardens and grand landscaping, to the sizing and proportions of the interior spaces, and in some cases, even the elements of furnishing and decor. Reid designed both large and small homes, and regardless of size, each home was crafted to fulfill the functions of everyday family life and hospitality. While Atlanta’s growth over time has resulted in the loss of some of Reid’s work, many of his firm’s designs are still cherished and well-maintained in areas like Anley Park and Druid Hills.
